Big Sur International Marathon

About the Big Sur International Marathon print

The Big Sur International Marathon follows one road. It starts south of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and runs north on California State Route 1 to Carmel, so the route poster is shaped by the coast itself: a long line that traces Highway 1 up the California coastline. The race was first held in 1986.

Two moments in particular define the course. Hurricane Point, with its 560 ft summit, comes between miles 10 and 12, and the Bixby Creek Bridge arrives at halfway. Our trace records about 340 m of climbing over the full distance, with the climb to Hurricane Point the best-known part of it.

The field is small, with 3,486 finishers in 2019 and 3,324 in 2022, which makes a Big Sur finish something few runners share. Add your race date and finish time, and the print keeps the whole coast road in view, from the start near Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park to the finish in Carmel.
