Do I need a permit to climb Mount Whitney?
Yes. Permits for day hikes and overnight trips are issued by lottery by the Inyo National Forest.

About the Mount Whitney print
Mount Whitney, at 14,505 ft, is the highest mountain in the contiguous United States. The Mount Whitney Trail starts at Whitney Portal, at about 8,360 ft above Lone Pine, and climbs through the forest past Lone Pine Lake and Outpost Camp to Trail Camp.
Above Trail Camp come the 99 switchbacks to Trail Crest, then the path along the crest of the Sierra to the summit hut. It is about 11 miles each way, with about 6,100 ft of climbing, and a permit is needed. The ready-made route runs one way, from Whitney Portal to the summit. Add the date of your climb, and the print keeps your own way to the top.
