Its eastern face is made of layers of shale and sandstone that keep slipping, so the hillside seems to shiver.

About the Mam Tor and the Great Ridge print
This loop from Castleton climbs to Mam Tor, the 517 m summit known as the Shivering Mountain for its crumbling eastern face, crowned by the banks of an Iron Age hill fort. From the top, the Great Ridge runs north-east above the Hope Valley and the Edale valley.
The ridge path dips to Hollins Cross, climbs over Back Tor and reaches Lose Hill, before the walk drops back down to Castleton. The loop is about 10.5 km. Add the date of your walk, and the print keeps your own day on the Great Ridge.
