A city-to-coast marathon from Potterrow through the Old Town and along Portobello promenade into East Lothian, looping around Gosford House before finishing in Musselburgh.

Is the Edinburgh Marathon course downhill?
Overall, yes. It starts with a descent from the Old Town, then runs largely flat along the coast, finishing almost 90 m lower than it starts. Our trace of the 2026 course still records about 100 m of climbing.
Which places does the Edinburgh Marathon pass?
The Old Town and the Royal Mile, the Scottish Parliament, Portobello promenade, Musselburgh, Prestonpans, Cockenzie and Port Seton, and Longniddry, before a loop through the grounds of Gosford House.
